History

History

It all started in the year 2000 with our founder working with high school students at the Sumangali Seva Ashram in Bangalore, Karnataka, India. This ashram runs a K – 10 School for underprivileged children and provides boarding for 100+ girls, who were either orphaned or have a single parent. While working with these children, we realized that the most effective way to impact the trajectory of these students is to address the lack of opportunities and resources at the individual, the group, and the communal levels. Our initiative at the individual level took shape in the form of individual student scholarships starting in December 2007. We offered scholarships to fifty-five 10th grade students to study in some of the best colleges and vocational schools in the state. In May of 2008, we offered scholarships to 3 additional students.

With these scholarships, Arodhum, the organization took shape.  Since then, it has been a most inspirational and fulfilling journey for all of us that are involved in Arodhum’s various initiatives.
